How PvP Works in WoW: Forever: 14 Honor Ranks, No Arena, and the Battleground Queues
PvP is the part of WoW: Forever that has changed the most quietly. There is no rated ladder and no arena — that was settled in the September 17 Q&A — and in their place is a 14-rank honor track that resets every patch cycle, three Classic battlegrounds, one new 15v15 battleground, and a ruleset system that decides who you can even group with in the open world. With the beta closing October 21 and launch on November 4, here is how the system fits together, what is confirmed versus merely datamined, and what to decide before launch day.
The shape of the system: 14 ranks, no rating
Blizzard's one-sentence description, from the Kotaku interview: each patch cycle runs a 14-rank honor track, resets at the start of the next cycle, and honor earned from battlegrounds and PvP content moves you up the track. No matchmaking rating exists, so your standing comes from participation over time rather than from a ladder — every cycle gives returning players the same fresh run at the same rewards, and nobody's rating hardens for months.
The beta client is more granular than the interview, and slightly different. It carries two currencies:
- Honor Points — earned by killing opposite-faction players and spent on special items. The client caps how many you can hold at 25,000, up from 15,000, as of the October 1 build — the same build that raised the Honor cost of most PvP gear and upgrade tokens by about 50% (official development notes). Note this is a holding cap, not a weekly cap.
- Rank Points — earned from tasks given in Gadgetzan and from battlegrounds; they raise your PvP rank, and each rank unlocks items in the Champion's Hall in Stormwind or the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar.
Blizzard has only ever described one blended "honor" track. The two-currency split is datamined, and it may not survive to launch — treat it as the current best model, not gospel.
The ranks themselves are datamined and mirror the original game exactly, from Private/Scout at rank 1 to Grand Marshal/High Warlord at 14. What sits on the track has changed: per the fan references, rewards include a tabard at rank 1, reworked elite armor across ranks 8–13 (95 reworked rank sets in total across the four original set families), black war mounts at ranks 11 and up, and the weapon arsenal at 14.
Rulesets decide your entire PvP life
Forever has no realm list; you pick a ruleset when you create a character, and that choice is more binding than any Classic realm pick ever was:
| Normal / RP | PvP | |
|---|---|---|
| Open-world combat in contested territory | Only if you flag yourself | Always |
| Flagging | /pvp or portrait toggle; unflags after 5 minutes out of combat in friendly territory | Permanent in contested zones |
| Factions per account | Both | One — an Alliance character blocks Horde creation, and vice versa |
| Grouping with the other faction | No | No |
| Battlegrounds | Shared across Normal, RP and PvP | Shared (Hardcore stays separate) |
Two consequences follow. First, switching rulesets means a new character — so settle it with your friends before launch, not after. Second, attacking a flagged player flags you, so on Normal and RP the open world stays mostly safe until you make it otherwise. Blizzard has also said systems similar to Season of Discovery's faction-balance measures could temporarily limit character creation on the busier side; that is a possibility, not a confirmed mechanic.
The battlegrounds, including the queues
The three Classic battlegrounds return, plus the new Darkspear Islands, a 15-versus-15 map off Kalimdor's coast that mixes strategic control points with flag capture and defense, and which Tim Jones has described as supplementing rather than replacing the originals. The datamined queue records (beta build 1.60.1.69893, subject to change) sketch the brackets:
| Battleground | Levels | Players per side |
|---|---|---|
| Warsong Gulch | 10–60 | 1–10 |
| Arathi Basin | 20–60 | 1–15 |
| Alterac Valley | 51–60 | 10–40 |
| Darkspear Islands | 30–60 | 1–15 |
| Random Battleground | 10–60 | 5–10 |
| Random Epic Battleground | 10–60 | 5–10 |
Three things stand out, all currently unexplained: Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin can start with fewer players per side than Classic Era; there are two new random queues; and whether Alterac Valley's map or win conditions changed at all is unknown — only its queue record matches Classic Era. In the beta, Dalaran's Underbelly hosts a battlemaster for all four battlegrounds plus quartermasters selling PvP accessories, weapons and armor.
Darkspear Islands also comes with two new reputations — the Horde's Darkspear Raiders and the Alliance's Theramore Expeditionary Force — and these feed Legacy challenges, so PvP standing counts toward account-wide progress. The datamine lists 44 reward variants across the two factions, mostly the same item at several item levels; how reputation is earned and what it costs is not documented yet.
What is not confirmed
The open questions matter more than usual because they change how you would spend launch week:
- Whether open-world kills award Honor. The client keeps Classic's honor messages, but that only proves the text exists. Blizzard has confirmed honor from battlegrounds and PvP content; until it says otherwise, do not plan to rank up by ganking.
- How exactly Rank Points are earned, and whether the Gadgetzan tasks are the main channel or a side channel.
- Whether you can queue for battlegrounds with a friend on another ruleset. Battlegrounds are shared across rulesets, but Blizzard has not said whether the queue groups themselves can mix.
- Whether the two-currency model, the 25,000 cap and the +50% gear costs are final. All of it is one build old as of October 6.
A pre-launch checklist for PvP players
- Settle your ruleset now. It is a per-character, one-faction commitment on PvP, and battlegrounds are the only cross-ruleset bridge. Our name system guide covers the related name-locking rules.
- Use the October 27 – November 3 name reservation to hold up to three names — first come, first served, and tied to pack eligibility.
- Budget around the new economics. The 25,000 honor cap plus ~50% higher gear costs means the early cycle is tuned to be a longer grind than Classic's was; the October 1 build notes are the baseline.
- Remember Darkspear Islands opens at 30. It is the only battleground gated above the low brackets, and it is the only one with Legacy-linked reputations attached.
- Watch the GDKP line. The beta's strict RMT rules apply in battleground economies too; our Q&A decisions roundup has the details.
- Treat everything datamined as provisional. The queue brackets, the currency split and the rank rewards are all client readings from a beta that still has two weeks to run.
::note Confirmed details here come from Blizzard's official sources: the September 17 live Q&A, the Kotaku interview as relayed by fan references, and the October 1 beta development notes (Honor cap 15,000 → 25,000 and gear cost increases). Queue brackets, the Honor/Rank Point split, rank titles, the 95 rank sets and Darkspear reputation rewards are datamined from beta clients and can change before launch; the faction-balance measure is described as a possibility, not a confirmed system. Beta ends October 21 and launch is November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST. Verified October 6, 2026. ::
