Project Epoch Reborn: Today Is the Final Stress Test Before the October Launch

The community-run revival of the C&D-struck Classic+ server Project Epoch holds its last open stress test on September 25 at 18:00 GMT, then closes the test server to prepare for an October launch. Here is what the project is, how it got here, and what its Soul of Iron and Explorer's Contract challenges actually do.

If you have been following the Classic+ private server scene this month, circle one time slot: September 25, 2026, 6:00 PM GMT. That is the final stress test for Project Epoch Reborn, the community-run revival of Project Epoch — and according to the team's September 18 announcement, the test server closes right after it so the project can prepare for a planned October 2026 launch.

What Project Epoch Reborn actually is

Reborn is not the original Project Epoch team. It is, in the project's own words, "a community-run continuation of the Project Epoch custom Classic+ MMORPG server" — a volunteer effort restoring the original's custom content and preparing it for a new chapter. The technical foundation is deliberately boring and battle-tested:

ItemDetail
ClientYour own 3.3.5a (build 12340) client
CoreOpen-source TrinityCore
PatchesDistributed and updated by the project's own launcher — no manual realmlist surgery
Business modelFree to play, no pay-to-win, no donor gear (stated in both the FAQ and the Terms of Service)
StatusActive open testing → planned launch October 2026

Registration is open now, and the team is recruiting game masters, developers, content creators, and testers through volunteer applications.

The road here: a C&D, a re-release, and a handover

Project Epoch has one of the more eventful recent histories in the scene, and it is worth understanding because it explains why Reborn exists at all.

DateEvent
September 8, 2025Blizzard serves a cease-and-desist on key members of the original Project Epoch team; the official site goes down and staff pledge to end support
2025–2026The project's remaining infrastructure is reported to have transitioned to another host, with original-team members keeping an intentionally low profile to limit legal exposure
April 2026A community-organized re-release pushes the server from roughly 200 to 700 concurrent players overnight; the announcement of Turtle WoW's shutdown triples that again, with reports of 2,000 concurrent on the Kezan zone alone
May 14, 2026Turtle WoW and Stormforge close permanently after Blizzard's legal actions
July 2026The original Project Epoch runs its own "Road to Launch" sequence — stress tests on July 7 and 12, name reservation July 22, launch July 26
September 2026Project Epoch Reborn operates as an open-testing community continuation, with a September 19 weekly changelog and the September 18 stress-test announcement
October 2026Planned Reborn launch

One caveat, stated plainly: the exact circumstances of the handover from the original operation to the Reborn team are not fully documented in public sources. Reborn's site describes itself as a continuation restoring Epoch's content; the legal shadow of the 2025 C&D hangs over any project using this material, and Reborn's own Terms of Service acknowledge that they "will act on a valid request" from a rights holder. Treat the October launch date the same way you would treat any roadmap date in this scene — as intent, not a guarantee.

The stress test: what it is for

The September 18 announcement is blunt about the ask: "it would be awesome to have as many people as available log in around this time." The test window is September 25, 18:00 GMT (that is 20:00 CEST, 2:00 PM ET, 8:00 PM CST — check your own offset). After the test, the server closes for launch preparation.

This is the same playbook the original Epoch used in July: stress tests exist to generate realistic load data so the team can set queue thresholds for launch day rather than guess. For testers, the value is twofold — you help calibrate the launch, and you get a preview of the custom content while the whole community is online at once. Note the project's Terms of Service: the realm "may be unavailable, and game progress may be wiped." Do not build your life around test-server characters.

How to connect

  1. Register an account on the project's site (one account covers both site and realm).
  2. Get a 3.3.5a (build 12340) client — you must own this yourself.
  3. Download the Project Epoch launcher, which handles custom patches and updates automatically. You should not need to edit realmlist.wtf by hand.
  4. macOS users, lower your expectations: there is currently no native macOS launcher. The practical path on Apple Silicon today is a Windows client in Wine/CrossOver or a VM — the same workaround set we documented in our macOS and Linux client setup guide.
  5. Join the community channel for testing updates and bug reporting — bug reports go to a tracker, not into global chat.

The challenge systems: Soul of Iron and Explorer's Contract

The most distinctive features documented on the site are optional, opt-in challenges that reframe the level 1–60 journey. Enrollment works the same way for both: an introduction arrives by mail at level 5, and you confirm your choice with a challenge NPC (guards can point you to them in towns) by level 8 — by typing your character's name, a deliberate friction step.

Soul of Iron

Reach level 60 without dying, and earn The Ironwrought. The rules are strict in a specifically Classic way:

  • A death ends the run. There are two ways out: retire the character, or make what the site calls "the weakened journey back to a capital's chronicler" to remove the challenge.
  • During that walk back, flight paths and teleport shortcuts are unavailable. Your failure is a pilgrimage, not a relog.
  • Milestones at levels 20, 40, and 60 grant achievements and rewards, including 12-, 16-, and 18-slot bags and potions.

This is the Hardcore-adjacent mode for people who find full permadeath too punishing but still want death to mean something. Where Blizzard's Forever beta shipped its own Hardcore rules within the Legacy challenge system, Reborn's version lives entirely in the game world — which is fitting for a server whose whole pitch is friction.

Explorer's Contract

Accept reduced experience for a slower journey. The original contract halves experience gains, except from exploration — so the mode actively rewards going places rather than grinding spawns. Completing the run awards The Patient title, with the same 20/40/60 milestone rewards.

The design logic is worth naming: on a custom content server whose main selling point is 1,600+ custom quests and new areas to discover, Explorer's Contract is a formal incentive to actually see that content instead of speedrunning past it.

The rest of the package

Beyond the challenges, the restored Epoch feature set includes:

  • Reworked classes — custom spells, talent changes, and updated abilities, on a 61-point talent system with deeper customization than stock 1.12.
  • Racial Knowledge — complete racial questlines to unlock new racial ability sets, then choose from the sets you have earned at the Racial Knowledger at level 60.
  • Eight new race/class combinations, including Dwarf Shaman and Undead Paladin — a combination Blizzard's own Forever is also shipping, which says something about where Classic+ design has converged.
  • Warmode PvP — opt-in world PvP with Bloody Token rewards from kills, the contested Battle for Hillsbrad, battlegrounds, and arena.
  • Transmogrification, custom quest chains, new settlements, and restored dungeons and raid encounters with custom boss mechanics.

What to watch after the stress test

Three things will tell you whether Reborn makes it past the October launch:

  1. Whether the stress test produces a working queue plan — launch-day stability is the single most common way small projects burn their goodwill in week one.
  2. Whether the changelog keeps its weekly cadence — the September 12–18 update landed on schedule; sustained shipping is the best public proxy for a healthy volunteer team.
  3. The legal weather — the whole post-Turtle scene now operates under the assumption that visibility invites risk, a dynamic we covered in our private server sustainability signals guide. Reborn's low-profile, non-commercial posture is the current defensive meta, and the takedown-hardening tactics used by Turtle successors are a useful benchmark for what survival looks like.

There is also an unavoidable calendar collision: Reborn's planned October launch lands while Blizzard's Forever beta is still running (it ends October 21) and ahead of Forever's November 4 launch. The Classic+ audience is about to have an official option for the first time — every community project launching into that window is, in effect, asking players to choose friction and custom content over a polished official product. The stress test tonight is the first real signal of whether that ask has an audience.

Accurate as of September 25, 2026. The stress-test time (18:00 GMT), the post-test server closure, the October 2026 launch plan, the challenge mechanics, and the connect requirements come from Project Epoch Reborn's own site and its September 18 announcement. The 2025 cease-and-desist is reported by MMObserver; the April 2026 population figures come from a community streamer's account and are unverified by the project; the exact handover between the original Epoch operation and the Reborn team is not publicly documented. Test-server progress may be wiped per the project's Terms of Service, and private server dates in this scene can slip without notice.
