The Gods of Zul'Aman Land October 22, and the Catch-Up Patch Matters More Than the Bear

Zul'Aman opens on the Burning Crusade anniversary realms on October 22 with no attunement, alongside the removal of Black Temple and Hyjal attunements, Honored Heroic keys and Badges of Justice on nearly every endgame boss.

The Burning Crusade anniversary realms have been the quiet corner of WoW Classic for weeks — no phase since Black Temple and Mount Hyjal opened on August 27, no word on Sunwell, and a player base watching the Forever beta eat the news cycle. On October 22 that changes, and the headline is not the thing most players will actually feel.

The date, and the name for it

Blizzard's announcement, headlined "Face the Gods of Zul'Aman," puts the global launch at October 22, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PDT / 23:00 BST. Outlets covering it split on what to call the update. Blizzard Watch labels it Phase 3.5 and frames it as a mini-phase between Black Temple and the eventual Sunwell release; other coverage notes that "Phase 3.5" is a community label and that Blizzard's own branding leads with the raid name. Either way it is the same update, and it is the second content drop of the anniversary cycle's second half.

Zul'Aman itself

The raid is the marquee item, and it is short and specific:

  • 10 players, level 70, six bosses — Nalorakk, Akil'zon, Jan'alai, Halazzi, Hex Lord Malacrass and Zul'jin.
  • Located in the Ghostlands, with a three-day reset lockout and no attunement required.
  • The Amani War Bear is not a drop. It comes from the timed hostage-rescue objective. Blizzard's wording: "Each time you defeat one of Zul'jin's lieutenants and rescue a hostage, you will earn additional loot and extend the timer, giving your raid more time to rescue the remaining hostages." Rescue all of them before the clock runs out and the mount is the reward.

One caveat worth flagging: Blizzard has not published the anniversary timer values. The widely circulated "20 minutes at the gong, extended toward 45 by the first kills" figure is the 2007 patch 2.3 baseline from the original game, not a confirmed anniversary setting. Third-party sources reuse it as though it were current; treat it as a starting assumption until someone times a live run.

Blizzard has announced no removal date for the bear. Unlike Wrath Classic, where the mount eventually became unobtainable, nothing here says the anniversary version will expire — so the pressure to earn it in the first weeks is social, not mechanical.

The half that changes more: the catch-up package

For a fresh 70, an alt, or a returning player, the accessibility changes bundled into the same patch are worth more than Zul'Aman. This is what ships on October 22:

ChangeWhat it does
Attunements removedThe Battle for Mount Hyjal and The Black Temple no longer require attunement. Any level 70 can zone in
Heroic keysReputation requirement for Heroic dungeon keys reduced to Honored
Heroic difficultyAll Heroic dungeons adjusted to their final, reduced difficulty state
Badges of JusticeNow drop from Doomlord Kazzak, Doomwalker, and all bosses in Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman
Badge vendorG'eras in Shattrath offers more powerful wares, Nether Vortex among them
World bossesKazzak and Doomwalker loot changed from Bind on Pickup to Bind on Equip
Epic gemsNow obtainable from Magtheridon's Black Sack of Gems and the Jewelcrafter's Brilliant Glass
CraftingPrimal Nether and Nether Vortex are no longer soulbound
LeatherworkingOutland faction vendors add recipes for Greater Drums, Knothide Quiver and Knothide Ammo Pouch

Two of those entries carry a sting. First, on the epic gems: Blizzard's own note says Brilliant Glasses and Black Sacks of Gems already made or already looted but unopened will not contain epic gems. Anyone who stockpiled them expecting to open them after the patch loses that bet. Second, on the attunement removal: it retires the Black Temple and Hyjal quest chains as gating content. That is good for access and bad for anyone who was selling the chain as a service — the Medallion of Karabor stops being a skill check or a selling point and becomes just another completed quest line.

Why it is landing now

The anniversary realms sit on the wrong side of the calendar. Forever launches on November 4, which leaves roughly two weeks of uninterrupted attention after Zul'Aman opens, and a good part of the raiding population is already inside the beta. Read charitably, the catch-up package is Blizzard making the anniversary realm actually enterable in the window it has left; read cynically, it is a patch designed to be finished quickly by players who will then move on.

The practical reading for anyone still raiding there is that the gearing floor just dropped sharply. Honored Heroic keys plus reduced Heroic difficulty plus Badges on almost everything is a fast pre-raid pipeline — which is exactly what a fresh 70 needs to chase a timed Zul'Aman run before groups get scarce. The bear stays obtainable for months; the well-populated timed runs are the resource with a shelf life.

What is still unanswered

  • A Sunwell date. The final phase is still only described as autumn 2026. Zul'Aman's arrival does not narrow the window, and it is the single announcement that would tell anniversary players how much runway the realm really has.
  • A Wrath of the Lich King anniversary edition. No announcement, and Warcraft Tavern's read is that it will be held back until the Forever launch noise subsides.
  • Whether the Heroic and attunement changes are permanent. They are presented as tuning, not as a temporary event, but nothing prevents a later phase from raising the floor again.
  • The Zul'Aman timer numbers, above.

Unlike the Forever beta, this update arrives with complete patch notes in advance — a reminder that the anniversary realms are being handled by a much smaller, quieter team, at a much more conventional pace.

Accurate as of October 13, 2026. Every change listed here comes from Blizzard's "Face the Gods of Zul'Aman" announcement as relayed by Warcraft Tavern, cross-checked against Blizzard Watch's phase overview and the catch-up breakdowns published by Timesaver.GG and METAMMO. Quoted Blizzard text is secondhand journalism, not a transcript we retrieved from Blizzard directly. The 2007 Zul'Aman timer figures are historical baseline values, not confirmed anniversary settings — Blizzard has published none. Nothing in this article has been play-tested by RealmList. Dates on a live realm can move; verify against Blizzard's official announcement before planning a raid week.
