Forever's Beta Phase Two Starts October 1: Level 30, and What It Still Leaves Gated
On the evening of September 30 (Pacific), Kaivax posted a two-sentence notice on the official Forever beta forum titled Beta Update Maintenance - October 1:
"Tomorrow morning PDT, we will take the WoW Forever Beta offline for maintenance. Several hours later, the Beta will resume with an updated build that includes changes and fixes, with the level cap raised to 30."
That closes the one question the September 29 phase-two announcement deliberately left open. Blizzard had described what was coming — a level 30 cap, new talents and class abilities, and the Darkspear Islands battleground — without saying when. Twenty-four hours later it said when.

The two things the notice still does not say
The post is short, and the gaps are worth reading carefully rather than filling in from habit.
- No downtime duration. "Several hours" is the whole estimate. There is no start time beyond "morning PDT" and no completion window.
- No region. Forever's beta is not a per-region deployment in the traditional sense — the project has been built around a realmless architecture — but previous population-cap increases also went unnamed by region, which makes it impossible to line up a maintenance window against your own afternoon.
Blizzard attached one further note: all the details will follow in the Beta Development Notes thread, the running changelog that was last updated on September 24. That thread is the only authoritative list of what is in the build; the maintenance post itself describes nothing.
What level 30 actually opens
The five extra levels matter less than which instances become reachable. Blizzard published level ranges for all nine of Forever's new dungeons on September 14, after correcting the numbers shown at BlizzCon:
| Dungeon | Level range | Reachable at a 30 cap |
|---|---|---|
| The Hall of Thanes | 13–18 | Yes — already open |
| Ruins of Lordaeron | 15–20 | Yes — already open |
| Excavation Site: Wetlands | 24–29 | Yes — this is the new one |
| City of Dalaran | 28–33 | Only the early levels |
| The Drowned City | 35–40 | No |
| Krol'dok Stronghold | 40–45 | No |
| Alcaz Prison | 48–53 | No |
| Blackmaw Hold | 55–60 | No |
| Shaper's Terrace | 58–60 | No |
Everything above roughly level 33 — the Riverglades, Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, and all three of the December 9 raid instances — stays out of reach for the rest of the test.
The other visible unlock is the Darkspear Islands battleground, the first genuinely new PvP map in Forever rather than a rework of a 2004 one, and by far the most consequential thing in this phase for anyone judging the project's content pipeline rather than its systems. Its client map exists as a separate file extracted from beta builds, which is where the 15-versus-15 framing comes from; Blizzard has published no level bracket, reward structure or launch rotation for it.
What the last three weeks are actually for
The beta window closes October 21, which leaves about twenty days of level 30 testing. Blizzard has said progress will not carry over, so the return on that time is information, not gear:
- Talent trees get their first real test at half-fill. Thirty levels of a sixty-level game is enough to see whether a build functions, not enough to see whether it is finished. Several of the September 24 numbers — Restoration Druid's Wrath at +50% damage, Elemental's Lava Burst increase, Retribution's Holy Strike scaling — were tuned against a level 20 ceiling and are being re-measured now with the extra ten points.
- The Legacy system gains spendable points. Its per-character spend limit at launch was flagged in early testing at 16 points against 65 earnable, which means the cap raise changes the cost of choices rather than the ceiling.
- Dungeon experience curves become measurable. The September 22 change cut dungeon mob experience and raised first-run dungeon quest experience, and nobody has yet been able to test the resulting curve above level 20.
Then the calendar tightens: beta ends October 21, Invite-A-Friend launch codes begin going out around October 20, name reservation runs October 27 to November 3, and launch is November 4 at 3:00 PM Pacific. Everyone starts at level 1 on fresh realms.
What is still outstanding from earlier promises
This is where the value of the maintenance note is negative rather than positive — it confirms a build, not a feature list. Items Blizzard has flagged but not shipped:
- The weather pass. The heavier rain and fog shown on September 23, still labelled "coming soon" in the days since.
- New class abilities and profession items. Explicitly named as part of the phase-two content, along with the Excavation Site dungeon. How much of that arrives today versus later in the window is unknown until the notes post.
- The Cooldown Manager. Still limited to five classes (Druid, Mage, Priest, Warrior, Warlock) and still without spell-rank support, with no date for either expansion.
- The hunter auto-shot fix. Confirmed by Blizzard on September 26 and promised for a later build; September 29's hotfix list did not mention it.
- Campfire persistence. Partially shipped — buffs now survive a wider range of resting actions — which is the shape most of these fixes take: usable, incomplete, and documented as such.
There is a version of reading this post that is simply "the cap went up". The more useful reading is that the beta has now spent four of its five weeks, and the outstanding list is still longer than the shipped list.
