WoW Forever's Beta Moves to Phase Two: Level 30, New Talents, and the Darkspear Islands

Blizzard announced the second beta phase on September 29: a level 30 cap, new talents and class abilities, and the first genuinely new battleground. What it opens, what it does not, and what is still undated.

On September 29, twelve days into the WoW Forever beta, Blizzard announced the test's second phase: the level cap rises from 20 to 30, unlocking new talents and class abilities, and the Darkspear Islands battleground enters testing.

The announcement recaps phase one — the Skyborne race, Zephras Isle, the Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron dungeons, the Camping system, and Forever's unusual "no fixed server" architecture — and then points at what comes next. Blizzard also used the moment to flag the first episode of the Forever Podcast, in which senior game designer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield and lead Classic designer Tim Jones reviewed week one with Countdown To Classic and Xaryu.

No date was given for the cap raise. That is the same pattern as the first three weeks of the test: the beta's own patch note cadence is the only schedule, and it arrives when it arrives.

What level 30 actually opens

The cap raise matters less for the five extra levels than for which content becomes reachable. Blizzard's own dungeon level ranges, published on September 14 to correct the numbers shown at BlizzCon, set out the ladder:

DungeonLevel rangeReachable at a 30 cap
The Hall of Thanes13–18Yes
Ruins of Lordaeron15–20Yes
Excavation Site: Wetlands24–29Yes
City of Dalaran28–33Only the first levels of it
The Drowned City35–40No
Krol'dok Stronghold40–45No
Alcaz Prison48–53No
Blackmaw Hold55–60No
Shaper's Terrace58–60No

Two of the three dungeons currently in the beta — Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron — were already open, so the new dungeon access is essentially Excavation Site: Wetlands plus the early floors of City of Dalaran. The Riverglades (roughly 35–45), Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas and all three raids stay out of reach until later phases or launch.

For anyone using the beta as a class audition rather than a content tour, that is the practical limit of it: you get thirty levels of a sixty-level game, and a talent tree you can only half fill. Beta progress is wiped on October 21 regardless.

The Darkspear Islands is the part that matters beyond the beta

The battleground announced for this phase is not a re-skin of a 2004 map. The Darkspear Islands is a new 15-versus-15 battleground set off Kalimdor, with the Horde fighting alongside the Darkspear trolls to push the Alliance off the islands and Alliance players deploying with the Theramore Expeditionary Force. The client already contains its own separate map file, extracted from beta build data and catalogued by community map projects — which is where the battleground's 15v15 framing and separate map come from, not from a live beta queue test.

That is the first hard evidence that Forever's content pipeline produces genuinely new material rather than a preserved 2006 snapshot. It also puts the game's PvP design in an unusual place: three original battlegrounds return, the Honor system is being reworked, the Legacy system has a PvP rank challenge category and a "For Great Honor" perk, and the roadmap lists PvP season refreshes for both spring and summer 2027 — but arenas have not been announced at all. Not scheduled, not ruled out. The original game had none, so this is an addition Blizzard has chosen not to make yet.

What Blizzard has not published about the Darkspear Islands: its level bracket, its honor rewards, how many capture points it has, or whether it will be in the rotation at launch.

The other September 28 signal: RMT enforcement

Two days before the phase-two announcement, Kaivax posted a short policy note titled "Gold buying rules" on the official forums. The substance: real-money transactions are not acceptable in World of Warcraft, and Blizzard is "taking steps to address RMT in the WoW: Forever Beta, and of course, when WoW: Forever goes live and beyond."

Read against the September 17 Q&A decisions — no GDKP, active enforcement against gold buying, and a design that explicitly rejects a WoW Token and any catch-up purchase — the post is less a new rule than a restatement of one. What is new is the framing: enforcement starts now, in a beta, on a test realm whose gold was already going to be wiped on October 21. Blizzard's stated position is that the behaviour being policed is the transaction, not its persistence. Community coverage of the note has focused on the same asymmetry — that the account action is aimed at buyers as well as sellers, which is the part of RMT enforcement that has historically been the softer side.

What to watch before October 21

  1. The cap raise date, and whether it comes with a region attached. Two population-cap increases have now gone unnamed by region; a dated content phase would be a better signal than either.
  2. PAX Aus, October 9–11. Blizzard confirmed that Holly Longdale and Clay Stone will give keynote presentations from Melbourne, and that Forever will be there Friday through Sunday AEDT. Clay Stone's own PAX session is billed as a deep dive into one of the new dungeons — the first targeted look at Forever's dungeon design rather than its systems.
  3. The podcast, episode two. Greenfield asked on September 25 what players want covered; the next episode is built around class design with guests from the systems team. Given how much of the beta's feedback has been about class tuning and dungeon experience, this is the closest thing to a design rationale Blizzard is likely to publish before launch.
  4. A Server Slam window. It has been referenced repeatedly in secondary coverage and has never been dated by Blizzard. If a public stress test is happening before launch, the calendar is getting tight: the beta closes October 21, name reservation runs October 27 to November 3, and launch is November 4.
Accurate as of September 30, 2026. The phase-two contents — level 30 cap, new talents and class abilities, and the Darkspear Islands battleground — come from Blizzard's September 29 announcement as reported by Gamer.com.tw and by GameListZone citing GamerBraves; RealmList has not seen a Blizzard post that names a date for the cap raise. Dungeon level ranges are Blizzard's list of September 14 as summarised by community aggregators, and the Darkspear Islands client map and its 15v15 framing come from community extraction of beta build data, which shows what a build contains rather than what will ship. Blizzard has published no level bracket, reward structure or launch rotation for the battleground, and no arena plans. The "Gold buying rules" post is quoted from the official forums via a blue tracker. Beta content, dates and systems change without notice, and beta progress is wiped when testing ends.
