Frostmourne's Heroic Tier 7 Is Live — and Every Boss Got a New Job
One week after its Normal debut, Frostmourne's Tier 7 went Heroic. Whitemane's announcement post, published October 7 under the plain title "Heroic Raids Open Today," switched on Heroic difficulty for all three endgame raids at 20:00 server time: Naxxramas, The Eye of Eternity and The Obsidian Sanctum, each in both 10-player and 25-player sizes. The framing of the post matters as much as the schedule — rather than a one-line "Heroic is now available," Whitemane published a boss-by-boss breakdown of every new mechanic, which is the clearest evidence yet of what "WotLK: Rebuffed" means in practice: the same fights, re-authored rather than re-scaled.

What opened, and who can walk in
Heroic entry carries the Normal progression requirement Whitemane committed to back at launch — the September schedule set Normal for September 30 and Heroic exactly one week later, with the stated goal of keeping Normal "a meaningful part of the tier." The post also notes that the encounters were refined throughout testing, with tuning adjustments, improved warnings and visual effects, and corrections to interactions that could make mechanics unreliable.
The three raids are the same trio that defined the original WotLK opening tier, but the Heroic layer adds mechanics rather than multipliers — the same design language we documented in the launch-window systems review of Heroic Naxxramas. Kel'Thuzad loses his Phase 1 and gains an attackable phylactery; Thaddius resurrects into an escalating burn race; Heigan drafts a raid member into the tunnel. None of these numbers appeared in 2008's Naxxramas.
The new mechanics, quarter by quarter
| Boss | Heroic addition |
|---|---|
| Anub'Rekhan | Carrion Wake trails damage and a heavy slow behind every Locust Swarm, permanently shrinking the kiting room; Crypt Guards now spawn beside the boss |
| Grand Widow Faerlina | Sacrificed Worshippers return as Risen Worshippers casting a 3-second interruptible Vengeful Blight (Heroic-only) |
| Maexxna | Web Wrap cocoons 2 players in 10-player and 4 in 25-player; each surviving cocoon stacks a healing-received reduction on the raid |
| Noth | Decursed players drop a damaging Plague Residue pool after a short window |
| Heigan | A selected team (off-tank/healer/DPS or three DPS in 25) is teleported into the Eye Stalk tunnel 20 seconds in and must fight back on foot; the dance floor remains mandatory for damage and threat |
| Loatheb | Volatile Spores carriers must reach a Purifying Mushroom (1 in 10-player, 2 in 25) before detonation; a carrier's death triggers Spore Catastrophe |
| Instructor Razuvious | Disciplinary Shout applies a severe cast-speed penalty to anyone in line of sight; Jagged Knife spreads once to players within 8 yards when the original bleed expires |
| Gothik | Soul Convergence marks players who must cluster within 8 yards to clear it; opening phase shortened to 3 minutes; Rider auras and Shroud of Death restored |
| The Four Horsemen | Each dead Horseman stacks Horsemen's Dirge: +35% damage taken by the raid, per stack |
| Patchwerk | Hateful Strike begins 3.65 seconds into combat and repeats every 1.2 seconds across all four difficulties; tank damage pressure reduced during testing |
| Grobbulus | Volatile Bile marks a player with a homing projectile whose impact damage is shared by anyone within 8 yards of the target |
| Gluth | Zombie Chow are correctly slowed after Decimate; their stacking Infected Wound is restored on Heroic |
| Thaddius | At 1% health, Tesla Rebirth: full heal, Polarity Shift removed, new final phase; every further 10% lost triggers a Tesla Burst that removes 90% of current health (cannot kill) and empowers both sides |
| Sapphiron | Frostbite greatly increases Frost damage taken until healed to full; Piercing Frost stacks armor and attack-speed reduction on the active tank |
| Kel'Thuzad | Opens directly at the boss; Guardians of Icecrown arrive at 60%; on first defeat his soul enters the Phylactery under Necrotic Surge; destroy it and he returns at 35% with an uninterruptible Frostbolt and a 5-second-warning Freezing Blast frontal |
| Malygos | Arcane Feedback picks 1 ranged DPS (10-player) or 2 (25-player): boosted output, but all their damage and healing is mirrored as Arcane damage to anyone within 10 yards; clears on Vortex |
| Sartharion | Twilight Blackout, a healing absorb that explodes when it expires, is dispelled or is fully consumed — its explosion is shared by players within 8 yards, and it now lands with every second lava wave |
A few of these deserve emphasis. Kel'Thuzad's two-stage death — kill him once, destroy the phylactery under escalating pulses, then fight him again at 35% with a lethal frontal — is the most structurally ambitious addition, turning the tier's final boss into a genuine multi-phase set piece. Thaddius's Tesla Rebirth inverts the fight's identity: polarity execution goes away, and what replaces it is a coordinated burn in which every 10% of boss health costs the raid 90% of its current health. And Heigan, the fight most famous for a floor dance, now splits the raid into a tunnel combat team while everyone else holds the dance floor — the safespot loophole of standing in a doorway is explicitly closed.
The numbers worth knowing
Whitemane published tuning figures alongside the mechanics, which is still unusual for a private server: Heroic melee damage on the Four Horsemen sits 30% above Normal values, fixed spell damage 60% above; Dirge is removed when a player leaves Naxxramas. Sartharion's Tenebron now opens six Twilight Eggs instead of twelve. These are the same kind of concrete, per-encounter numbers that make the realm's Tier 7 parsing rules meaningful — the scoring framework our parsing guide covers assumes exactly this level of documented tuning.
Raid logs are coming to the website
The post closes with a line that may matter more than any single mechanic: all raid logs are being recorded and will be available on the website soon. Frostmourne launched with the most systems-heavy WotLK package of the year — 8,500+ concurrent players on day one, despite a 30-minute infrastructure attack — and combat logging with a public interface is the difference between a realm players raid on and a realm players compete on. For the guilds now preparing to fight a phylactery, the competitive layer arrives at the same time as the difficulty spike.
::note Accurate as of October 8, 2026. All mechanics, tuning numbers and the 20:00 opening time come from Whitemane's official October 7 announcement on frostmourne.whitemane.gg; the Normal-progression requirement and the September 30 / October 7 schedule come from the project's "The Final Stretch" post. Launch-day concurrency is Whitemane's own first-party figure. Heroic encounter behavior was not independently tested by RealmList — we quote the operator's documentation, which is self-reported, not audited. ::
