Horde Players Are Walking Into Dalaran — and Blizzard Says That Wasn't the Plan
When the October 8 build opened the City of Dalaran dungeon, the framing was simple: the city belongs to the Alliance in this era of Azeroth, Alliance characters stroll in, and the Horde breaks into the dungeon from outside. Two days later, that framing has collapsed into something much more interesting — a quest-gated Horde route into the city itself, and a developer statement that it is not supposed to work.

How the backdoor works
The route runs through a Horde chain that starts in Tarren Mill, reconstructed by beta players and Wowhead, and confirmed against the beta client's own quest cache (quest 96984, build 70235):
- Magus Wordeen Voidglare (Tarren Mill): Prison Break In and Key to the City, which sends you after the Grimy Key.
- Keeper Bel'varil: Stone Tokens — collect 10 Worn Stone Tokens.
- Dalaran Patrols: kill 6 Dalaran Summoners and 12 Elemental Slaves.
- Bracers of Binding: collect 4 Bracers of Earth Binding.
- Turn in Blood in the Streets to the Image of Archmage Modera outside the city.
- Heart of Disruption: enter the city and collect the Arcane Mote. The reward is the Dalaran Sewer Key.
- After running the dungeon, take Shrewd Negotiations — deliver the mote from the Shade of the Archmage to Archmage Celindra inside Dalaran.
Complete that sequence and the city's guards turn neutral toward Horde characters. The city opens up for free exploration much as it does for the Alliance — with real limits: not every NPC offers services to the Horde (reports so far include buying supplies, the mage trainer and the stable), and safe passage holds only as long as players keep defeating the Archmage in the dungeon. Wowhead's favourite discovery stands, though: fishing coins out of the Dalaran fountain works.
The quest text itself frames all of this as a break-in — Wordeen tells you the Kirin Tor will be "too busy to stop you," and to scavenge what you will. Where the Alliance enters through the sewers via the Cantrips & Crows route, the Horde comes in from outside with an imbued key. The writing is deliberately sanctioned trespass.
"Not really intended"
Here is the twist that turns this from a fun discovery into a briefing. On October 8, Josh Greenfield responded to the phenomenon directly: full Horde access to the city "wasn't really intended," and the team is looking at it. In the same response he confirmed the companion bug — Horde characters were earning Kirin Tor reputation through this access, a fix for which is already internal and expected in next week's beta build.
So the current state is: the quest chain and the key are intended content, but the city-wide neutral-guards treatment that follows is at least partially an artifact, and any Kirin Tor rep a Horde tester is farming right now comes from a bug scheduled to close.
The community split along exactly the line you would expect. On Reddit, some players call the whole arrangement "probably just a bug" that a patch will undo; others argue that a quest-gated entry with a named key item "doesn't sound like a bug." GamesRadar+ went further and framed the dungeon as committing one of the MMO's oldest no-nos — letting the Horde walk unmolested through a city that canonically wants them dead.
Why it matters beyond the bug report
Strip the bug question out and something notable remains: Blizzard wrote a quest-sanctioned route for the Horde into enemy-held territory, with dialogue that treats it as espionage rather than an error. That is a faction-border design decision, not an accident of phasing — the faction divide in Classic is enforced by NPCs and guards, and here the game is deliberately softening it for one chain, one city, with conditions attached.
If the neutral-guards state survives to launch in some restricted form, Forever will have quietly rewritten a piece of faction geography that has stood since 2004. If it gets patched to a hard wall after the dungeon quest, the current window is a beta-only curiosity. Either answer is worth having on record before November 4 — and right now, the developer's own words say the second outcome is the intended one.
